‘Tis the season for some Sonos…but where do you begin? If you’ve read any of my previous blog posts, you know that I’m a HUGE fan of Sonos, but if you go to the BIG Box Store it can be overwhelming when you see just how many Sonos options there are. (BTW…please feel free to LOOK, but if you find ANY value in my posts, consider making your Sonos purchases directly from me…I’m happy to ship them to you. 😊) Where do you begin? Well look no further, today I’m going to start a 4 part series to dig deep and fill you in on everything you need to know to make the BEST decision for which Sonos product is the perfect one for your space.
This is Part 3.
Now let’s look at the next 4 Sonos pieces that I have classified as ‘freestanding’ speakers. They are the Sonos Playbar, the Sonos Beam, the Sonos Playbase and the Sonos Sub. These devices are unique to the previous mentioned ones in the fact that they are able to be used for streaming music, but they are also designed to connect to your television or entertainment source. This gives you the added flexibility of having dual purpose, you can fill your room with music or you can have a better audio source for your television rather than just relying on the speakers from your television. (I find this VERY beneficial when you choose to mount your television to the wall…remember, most television speakers are now on the backs of the televisions, so if it’s mounted to a wall, you are essentially diminishing the sound from your television quite a bit.). Now to make the decision as to which is best for your space.
First let’s look at the Playbar, this piece can either be mounted to the wall with your television or set on a mantle or piece of furniture.
This has nine speakers in it that I promise you will fill up a room with sound. These are great for larger spaces like living rooms or family rooms, especially if they are larger or more open concept. You can also mount them to the television mount, so if you have an articulating or full motion mount, the player can move right with the television making sure that you always have the best sound with your television.
The Sonos Beam functions in a similar fashion, but is slightly smaller. There are five speakers in this device, but it does have the addition
of the Alexa voice. This is the perfect solution for smaller rooms like a den/study or a bedroom. This piece is available in either white or black and again can be wall mounted or placed on a piece of furniture.
That brings us to the Sonos Playbase. This piece was originally designed by Sonos to be a swivel speaker base under a television if you keep it on this stand. It is similar to the the sound you’re going to get from the Playbar, but like the Beam, it has Amazon Alexa built in and it comes in either black or white color. Personally, I’ve never been a huge fan of using it for this purpose as I don’t like to see televisions on stands, but I tell you the BEST application that I heard for it was to use it in a kitchen for your audio source by putting it up above your refrigerator. With the slim design, this fits nicely above the refrigerator and still fits just below your upper cabinets and creates a great sound to fill the whole space.
That brings us to the final ‘freestanding’ Sonos product. The Sonos Sub. I LOVE this piece! First of all, it just looks cool….kinda reminds me of a beautiful contemporary piece of art that gives you some great sound! It comes in a gorgeous black or white piano finish. It’s also super versatile…it can be paired with either the Beam or the Playbar to create a 3.1 Entertainment set up or you can add a pair of either the
Sonos Ones, HAY Ones, Play 1’s, Play 5’s or even a pair of your own speakers, either in-wall or freestanding
to create a 5.1 Surround Sound Set up. (More on using your own speakers later.). Talk about versatility….and this can almost ALL be set up as a DIY system in a matter of a couple of
hours! One quick note, if you do choose to set up a 5.1 Surround Sound with Sonos and use any of the Ones, HAY Ones, Play 1’s or Play 5’s, I almost always recommend ordering in a set of Sanus speaker stands to set them on. These come in either white or black and this particular set will work for ALL of the mentioned speakers. They are also the perfect height for behind a sofa or to tuck them in the corner of the room to add sound.
